The media is increasingly reporting a rise in stress and anxiety within children and teenagers as they are battling peer and exam pressures. Together with that we read about increased cases of autism, ADHD, ADD, and so forth. So how to cope with that naturally? How can you deal with that without having your child to pop some pills?
Some of the solutions include Reiki and Yoga, together with a wholsome diet. Below is just a little bit of an extract of how these natural approaches can benefit your child and how they are applied.
Once you start looking, the internet is filled with forums and association articles discussing the benefits of Reiki to teenagers and children. Personally I have had my own success stories with children in my practice (see an older blog post), but here are what others had to say:
- Lawrence Palevsky, M.D., FAAP, former chief of pediatric acute care at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, has reportedly promoted Reiki as a valuable part of care, of conditions including ADHD, ADD, Asthma and IBS as Reiki quietly addresses the emotional component of conditions, and empowers kids with another tool for self-regulation.
- According to Pamela Miles, author of Reiki: A Comprehensive Guide (Penguin Group, 2006) “Reiki is great for teens because they don’t have to talk. It is rare for teens to want to tell their problems to anyone who is not their age.”
So what are the direct benefits of Reiki to teenagers and children? Reiki..:
- Reiki is calming & balancing
- Reiki provides a sense of inner peace
- It improves concentration
- Supports the management of ADHD or ADD
- Supports the management of Autism
- It gives children a way to deal with the stresses of growing up
- Promotes creativity
- It enhances relaxation and sleep
How is Reiki applied to children or teenagers?
There are many ways how Reiki can be used in supporting teenagers and children. Teenagers can either choose to learn Reiki for themselves, which would really empower them and give them a tool for dealing with stresses and anxieties. Otherwise they can simply see a practitioner or their parents for frequent treatments. This leads me to the next option of the parents learning Reiki and using it as a tool to connect with their children.
In a treatment setting the practitioner will ask the parents to stay in the room during the session or the door will stay open and the parents sit outside. The practitioner will either provide a hands on treatment, equal to the one given to adults. Depending on the child and the trust build, the practitioner might also teach the child or teenager a simple meditation, while channeling Reiki, to keep their mind focused and manage their “boredom”.
Alternatively with very young children, a practitioner might only sit in the same room with the child for repeated sessions and sends the energy from a distance while the child maintains at play. When over several treatments a trust has build and the child wishes to receive Reiki in a traditional treatment setting the practitioner can then apply Reiki in a more traditional format on the massage table, or seated on a chair.
It is note worthy that small children only need approximately 10-15 min of Reiki initially and the time span can be increased over time. The child should always be allowed to move and to leave the table if they do not feel comfortable.
In conjunction with Reiki, Yoga for teenagers can be a profound tool teaching children how to focus their minds, and therefore provide them with greater ability to concentrate. Yoga is also physically strong allowing the children to achieve greater performance in their PE classes, it is a safe outlet for their heightened energy, improves their posture and increases their flexibility.
- heightens concentration & attention
- enables them to study better
- reduces experience of stress or anxiety
- reduces violent tendencies
- increases inner peace
- increases flexibility
- balances hormone levels
- assists spine health & posture
So how does a Yoga Class for kids and teenagers look?
Depending on the Yoga school the classes are generally around 1 hour and are tailored to the needs of the particular age bracket. If children attend a kids Bikram (Hot) Yoga class, the class is generally at a slight reduced heat, however still allows for adequate heat to enable the child to more easily get into a pose, and reduce the risk of injury.
Finally it is a well known and researched fact, that we are what we eat. If you search the internet or look through some wholefood bibles you read the same thing over and over.
By now it is popular knowledge that highly processed foods, that are high in GI and low in nutrients such as white flour products and sugar products can significantly increase episodes of hyperactivity. In addition foods that are packed with colorings, preservatives and additives, negatively impact children with ADHD, ADD, Hyperactivity. Parents with kids suffering from any concentration problems or hyper activity are encouraged to feed their children wholefoods, and in particularly foods high in Essential Fatty Acids, such as Seeds, Nuts, Fish, but also fruit and vegetables. Just do a an internet search or meet with a nutritionist / homeopath to find out more about foods for your kids.
