Every Reiki related blog (mine included) always raves about the benefits of Reiki in pregnancy. Yet few Reiki practitioners

are being taught how to properly give Reiki to a pregnant woman, so this little blog is addressed to all the professional Reiki practitioners and spiritual healers out there who offer healing in pregnancy yet have not trained in other bodywork modalities in which one is trained of the proper positioning of a pregnant body.

Most spiritual healers are unfortunately unaware of the significant risks involved of lying a pregnant woman on her back for prolonged periods. Back lying from the second trimester can cause a compression of the inferior vena cava – which in layman’s terms the major blood vessel that returns the blood flow from the body back to the heart. The weight of the woman’s womb and organs (which have been pushed up further into the upper abdomen) can compress the blood flow of the vein, cause the woman to faint and can even cause miscarriage in worst case scenario death.

So here the best positionings for your pregnant client:

  1. Sitting upright in a chair or straddling a chair however the woman is most comfortable
  2. side lying – lie the pregnant woman onto her left side, place one pillow under the head, give her one pillow to cuddle and 1-2 pillows under her 90 degrees angled top leg, while the lower leg is stretched out.

  3. half lying – create a wedge with a minimum of 5 pillows behind the woman’s back and head, place 1-2 pillows under her knees and feet.
